2104) MINT MUSEUM QUALITY OFFICERS GRADE PAPPENHEIM RAPIER, CIRCA 1620-30:
Introduction: Museum condition, with maker’s mark; even the shell guards are original. They seldom come this exceptional. This sword typology is thought to be attributed to the cavalry of Gottfried Heinrich Graf Pappenheim, the Imperial General of the Thirty-Year War. A near-identical example appears in an engraving by Wenzel Hollar of General Pappenheim (see above).
Comparable: The close similarity among these swords suggests they may have formed part of a larger group commissioned for a specific guard.
-A similar sword hilt, finished with silver and retaining its velvet covering at the ricasso, formerly in the armory of the Princes Zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck at Schloss Dyck.
-A second example, from the de Cosson collection, is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. #M.56-1946).
-A third is preserved in the Wallace Collection (inv. #A645).
Description: Under the Norman typology, this is a Type 67. Superbly constructed with a tapering blade of diamond-section to a tip, short double fuller, makers mark on a recessed ricasso inside the hilt, symmetrical iron hilt of faceted bars, comprising a pair of recurved rectangular quillons with knuckle-guard with a central molding and with terminal en suite, quillon block with chevron design, quillon, outer guard joined to the knuckle-guard, upper ring-guards joined by a short molded bar, small lower ring guard, matching inner-guard, and an octagonal pear-shaped pommel, wooden grip with an early wire binding with Turks heads.
Approximate length: 48.5 inches.
Provenance: An old European collection.
Conclusion: Pappenheimer swords are a staple for sword collectors. This officer’s grade Pappenheimer in museum condition with maker’s mark is an excellent example, yet priced to sell immediately with free shipping
