Introduction: During the Victorian period, collecting Arms and Armor was very fashionable among the wealthy, but there weren’t enough real Medieval and Renaissance period Arms and Armor pieces to satisfy demand. During this period, many reproduction pieces of exceptional quality were made by old-world artisans. The most valued were items for Nobles and Royalty. This example is NOT a cast. This is a highly stylized Victorian hand-embossed repousse made the same way as the famous 1560 “Chimera” parade burgonet helmet, originally part of the Chimera set, offered as a wedding present to the 3rd Duke of Alba Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel. The original resides at the world-famous Musée de l’Armée, Paris.
Description: This is a gilded on steel burgonet, a type of lightweight Renaissance-era helmet characterized by its rounded skull, prominent brow visor, cheek-pieces, and a neck guard. The defining feature is the intricately cast, three-dimensional winged dragon (or chimera) perched aggressively across the central comb. A female caryatid or siren figure acts as a decorative transition on the forehead just below the beast’s snout. The skull of the helmet is heavily embellished using relief and repoussé techniques. It features elaborate foliated scrolls, floral patterns, and classical imagery meant to evoke Roman antiquity.

Discussion: Neither the original nor this Victorian replica was intended for actual battlefield combat.
