2059) RARE KNIGHTLY DAGGER CIRCA 1375–1425 MUSEUM QUALITY IN THE FORM OF A MEDIEVAL SWORD:
Introduction: A stout dagger with superb workmanship and a rare typology. A near-identical one, except smaller, appears on page 321 (9) in my book.
Early daggers are dated based on overall analogies to Medieval swords. The quillon dagger is made in the cruciform shape like the period sword, except much smaller. Victorian collectors incorrectly assumed these were children’s swords. Quillon daggers were surprisingly rare in the Middle Ages (ignoring the Hollywood films). Daggers first appeared circa 1250 or possibly slightly earlier. They are illustrated in the Maciejowski Bible. During this period, quillon daggers of this form were usually knightly weapons.
Discussion: The cruciform design of the dagger is still used today in bayonets and combat knives because of its simple yet effective design. Quillon daggers typically have a blade (usually with a two-sided edge), a guard, and a pommel, with the tang threaded through. Like swords, they have a wood grip held together by a turned pin at the apex of the pommel. Quillon daggers can vary, as they were designed based on intended use, fashion, and cost. Many daggers were made and decorated en suite with the owner’s sword. Pommels followed the Oakeshott pommel typology.
Description: Constructed with an Oakeshott Style 1 quadrilateral guard; The pommel is an Oakeshott Type K, with a hammered finial button; the blade tapers quickly to an acute tip with a strong medial ridge on a stiff lozenge-shaped blade. A cross pattee inlaid in latten on the forte on both sides.
Approximate Length: 18.75 inches.
Condition: Superb, appears to have been cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner at one time.
Comparables: A near-identical one, except smaller (15 inches), appears on page 321 (#9) in my book.
