2055) Early Highland Scottish Dirk Circa 1680:

Introduction: This typology of Scottish dagger is important because it historically transitions away from medieval daggers into a distinctly Scottish design. 

Discussion: The handle features the classic “lobate” haunches at the base where it meets the blade. This style directly evolved from the medieval ballock dagger (or kidney dagger). Over time, these swelling lobes became flattened out into a purely stylized, geometric Scottish design.

Description: The hilt is carved from a dense, dark wood, commonly bog oak or boxwood root, decorated with traditional interlaced Celtic knotwork or chevron patterns. The top view shows a wide, flat, flared pommel cap featuring a pierced brass washer shaped in a cross or quatrefoil motif. It is secured by a central iron peen or nut holding the full tang of the blade tightly to the hilt. The blade is heavily tapered, thick, and sharply pointed, transitioning from a single-edged flat spine near the hilt to a slim, needle-like piercing tip. It displays a traditional file-work pattern (called jimping) or decorative scallop detailing along the spine.

Length: Approximately 16.50 inches.

Condition: Very good.

Provenance: A French collector.

Conclusion: A very elegant dagger that should be welcomed by any collector with a taste for the exceptional. Priced to sell today for a lot less than you think.
