2035 Axe

2035) SILVER INLAYED BEARDED VIKING AXE CIRCA 8th-11th CENTURY:

Introduction: In battle, the hooking shape of the bearded axe was highly functional. A warrior could hook the top of an enemy’s shield and pull it down to create an opening or hook an opponent’s leg or neck to pull them off balance.

Discussion: A bearded axe, also known as a “Skeggøx”, is a group of axes that were used as tools and weapons as early as the 6th century AD. They are most associated with Scandinavian Vikings. Decorated weapons – swords, axes, spears – among the Vikings were reserved for the Chieftains and other high-ranking members. They served as symbols of rank and status, yet were still highly effective weapons in war and farming.

Description: Decorated on both sides, the shaft and the upper side with Norse interlace/knotwork and possibly later Scandinavian art styles. richly inlaid in silver wire. The broad cutting edge and deep lower “beard” are characteristic features that allow a user to grip the haft close to the blade for finer control.  The curved upper and lower metal wings (lugs) flanking the socket area provide a wider surface area to clamp against a wooden shaft, preventing the head from loosening or wobbling under heavy impact. The clean design adds aesthetic appeal without compromising the basic profile of a utilitarian or martial tool.

Condition: Conserved/restored to museum standards.

Approximate Dimensions:   Length: 7 inches, maximum height:5 inches.

Comparable: This decoration is strikingly similar to the famous Mammen Axe (found in Jutland, Denmark, ~970 CE), one of the most celebrated examples of Viking metalwork.

Provenance: From an American collection started over 40 years ago.

Conclusion: The pitting on the iron surface is consistent with age and oxidation. Silver-inlaid axes were prestige weapons, likely owned by chieftains or warriors of high rank.

Viking axes of this quality seldom make it to the collectors’ market. This is a rare opportunity to own a highly collectible, museum-quality Viking axe.  ACT-NOW, this one should sell quickly!!!*
