2019 Antique Sword

2019) SUPERB DUTCH INFANTRY SCALLOPED SHELL GUARD SWORD WITH SHEATH CIRCA 1620:

Introduction: This typology of sword represents a pivotal transition period in European weaponry during the Forty Years’ War and Thirty Years’ War. These robust, utilitarian sidearms were standard issue for Dutch forces. Although this type of sword has some affinities with the tessak or dussage, it is not the same type.

Description: Sword constructed with a flat, very wide, double-edged blade with two fullers the length of the forte, fullers decorated on one side with SOLINGEN between pelt marks, the fullers on the opposite side decorated with ME FECIT between pellet marks, and an unidentified maker’s mark at the ricasso, possibly an Amsterdam maker. The steel hilt is constructed of rectangular bars, vertically recurved quillons with button-shaped tips, one extending to a swept hilt, a shell-shaped knuckle guard, an inner ring guard, a thumb loop, an oval-shaped pommel, wire-covered wooden grip with Turks’ heads. The scabbard is constructed with an iron-mounted black leather scabbard, the locket with a frog-hook.

Approximate length: 34.5 inches.

Condition: Very good.

Provenance: American collector and scholar in the field.

Comparable: A near identical example is found in the Royal Collection at the Tower of London.

Discussion: As the metal gauntlet became passe, the rapier/sword now needed a new way to protect the hand. The most common was the cup hilt. However, other esoteric examples evolved. The shell guard on this sword falls into this category. The shell guard was designed to protect the hand; the wide blade is suitable for slashing and thrusting, but shorter than the rapidly evolving rapier.

“Broadsword” is a Victorian term, not used in the Medieval or Renaissance periods. The term was created to differentiate between the thin-bladed civilian rapier and the shorter but wider-bladed military swords, such as Scottish swords, Schiavonas, and Tessaks.

Conclusion: To find a sword with its original sheath is seldom found in the collectors’ market. Finding an elegant sword like this one, with a sheath and in superb condition, is rare. This is a great addition to any collection. The quality and condition of this sword speaks for itself. ACT-KNOW and avoid disappointment.
