1994) MASSIVE TWO HEADED MEDIEVAL MINT PERIOD AXE:

Introduction: This typology of massive, double-headed iron broadaxe, has been attributed to Viking, Anglo-Saxon, or other Germanic origins from the 7th to 9th century CE. It is characterized by its significant size and dual-purpose design, featuring two distinct types of blades on a single central socketing shaft. 

Description: Forged from iron or very low carbon steel. Constructed with dual heads. One side features a large, fan-shaped broad-axe blade. The other side emulates a traditional “skeggox” or “bearded” axe, where the lower part of the blade extends downward (the “beard”) to provide a longer cutting edge without significantly increasing weight.

Condition: Superb, museum quality. Professionally mounted on a museum display.

Length: 14 inches.

Discussion: After the fall of the Berlin Wall, swords, spears and axes from Central and Eastern Europe have slowly made their way to the West.  The best examples were found originally and since then the market has dried up. This example stands out because of its condition and massive size.

Provenance:

–Originally sold to an American collector who started collecting after returning from the Vietnam War. We thank him for his service. The heirs have no use for it.

-A European metal detectorist.

Conclusion: I like ground-finds; they have a certain mystery because they show their age after being dormant underground for centuries.  They are inexpensive and carry a certain mystic not found in other arms and armor. They also make exceptional conversation pieces because they show their age.
