1905 Chest

1905) ELEGANT SMALL WALNUT IBERIAN BARGUENO CHEST WITH SILVER AND BRASS INLAY:  Possibly from an Aragon workshop, 16th – 17th centuries.

Description: A small, beautiful Mudejar wooden bargueno expertly decorated with gilt-brass and silver floral and geometric patterns in the traditional marquetry Mudejar style of Iberia. The inside of the box contains a variety of similarly decorated drawers affixed with small brass knobs. The top of the box is affixed with a swiveling bronze handle, and the bottom with red fabric.

Dimensions: 7 5/16 x 5 x 5 in., (18.6 x 12.7 x 12.7 cm.)

Condition: Very good, almost certainly cleaned and conserved in the last 20 years.

Comparables: Similar examples can be seen in the Madrid Museum of Decorative Arts, inventory ref. 2820; in the Santa Cruz Museum in Toledo, ref. No. 11.588 and at the Hispanic Society of America.

Reference bibliography: El mueble en España Siglos XVI – XVII” (Furniture in Spain, 16th – 17th centuries) by Maria Paz Aguiló Alonso. CSIC. Published by Ediciones Antiquaria. Madrid, 1993.

Conclusion: A highly decorative and elegant, quaint piece that makes a thunderous statement of class and style for being such a small piece of furniture. Very good overall condition. However, as you would expect, having small signs of age and use appropriate for its age. Some wire inlay may be loose in certain places—some very minor spots of loss to inlay, particularly at the rear. The door opens, closes, and the lock mechanism functions. Having its original key.
