1895) A MAXIMILIAN PERIOD BOAR SWORD CIRCA 1520 OF EXCEPTIONAL CONSTRUCTION: A magnificent museum-quality German boar sword. The boar sword was designed for hunting boar. Its distinctive spear tip is equipped with a slit to accommodate a traversing stop bar, so the charging boar is stopped in its tracks without coming within goring distance of the hunter or his horse. The “high hunt” was a flamboyant affair for the mega-wealthy, who normally owned the land; the hunt took place. This sword is of exceptional quality, usually better than most swords of the period.

Description: Superb early construction, possibly the best boar sword I have seen in 35 years, even in museums. Pear-shaped, fluted pommel, ring guard, and quillons decorated en suite. Massive and deeply fullered blade leading to a slit for a traversing stop bar, leaf-shaped tip, and original wooden grip.

Discussion: The wealthy hunted bear, boar, and deer in what was referred to as the ‚”high hunt”. Boar , which is a very dangerous animal, was hunted with a boar sword from foot or horseback with this type of specialty sword. Lesser animals, such as birds and rabbits, were hunted by the poor. The hunt for the wealthy and noble was an elaborate affair planned with military precision and included many servants. Among the multitude of servants were beaters who made noise using implements to scare animals in the direction of the hunters. The hunters would be camouflaged in natural terrain, using camouflaged carts, artificial hedges, or positioned atop trees, or any combination, as the animals were driven to them.

Conclusion: True museum-quality pieces are difficult to find, especially this early. Even though it’s a world-class museum piece, it’s very reasonably priced for a quick sale. As I mention several times in my book, high-quality pieces almost always appreciate in value much faster than average or lower-end pieces.
