1874) DECORATED OTTOMAN EMPIRE COPPER GILDED MACE CIRCA 1700: An identical mace sold at Czerny’s International Auction House , Sarzana (SP), Italy , June 16, 2023, lot # 121 for 6,500 euros, plus a 25% buyers’ premium, plus shipping, totaling approximately $10,300. My price is a fraction of this!!!
Introduction: This is a highly expensive, ornate mace. For a person of stature to own a mace like this is the equivalent of a person in our day and age making a fashion or opulence statement by wearing very expensive jewelry, such as a Rolex or Audemars Piguet watch. This is not a war mace, which historically would not have been highly decorated or made of copper.
Description: Constructed with original gilding (some missing) on a floral and scroll-engraved head with mushroom pommel, wrapped haft in leather. As you would expect, some indentures on the reverse pear shaped head.
Length: 23 1/4 inches.
Discussion: It’s known among collectors that Ottoman/Turkish Arms and Armor are exceptionally elegant and well-constructed. Ironically, some of the biggest admirers of Ottoman fashion were the Europeans whom the Ottomans sought to conquer.
Under the leadership of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Turkish invasion to conquer Europe reached the gates of Vienna in 1529. Many Europeans were somewhat dismayed by the grandeur of Turkish Arms and Armor. A particular standout was the effectiveness of the light Turkish cavalry, with their curved swords, against the heavily armored European lancers. Soon, Europeans developed a taste for the esoteric Turkish armor at parades, social events, and tournaments. Ottoman fashion was in vogue by the mid-16th century; the Habsburg courts in Vienna and Prague succumbed to the Turkish craze.
Conclusion: Ottoman/Turkish Arms and Armor played a big role in Medieval and Renaissance Western and Central Europe. Many European Arms and Armor collections include Ottoman/Turkish pieces. They are very decorative. In general much less expensive than Western or Central European Arms and Armor. A European parade mace would cost two to three times more than this mace.
