1709) Professional Gamblers Protection Kit Late 1800s: Very elegantly carved wood carrying case containing a professional gambler’s protection kit for the traveling gambler during the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Professional gamblers went from town to town, separating people from their hard-earned money. It was not in the gambler’s best interest to stay in any town very long. They traveled by horse, stagecoach, and train. They were nomadic and, in many instances, needed to leave in a hurry so they could not be bogged down but with only the essentials. In the old western towns of Deadwood, Dodge City, Tombstone, and Virginia City, gamblers played with their backs to the wall and their guns at the ready. Games such as Chuck-A-Luck, Three Card Monte, High Dice, and Faro were the most preferred.
The Protection Kit Contains: a small caliber percussion pistol, a beautiful push dagger with exotic grip, and an intricately carved wood carrying case.
Approximate Dimensions: 7x5x4 inches.
Conclusion: I normally do not handle an item like this. However, it was acquired as a trade-in, and I have to confess I find it rather interesting, and it’s grown on me. The stories this gambler’s kit could tell if it could speak. If you’re looking for an interesting conversation piece, this is it. Priced for a lot less than what the auction houses sell them for at under $2K! I need to find it a new good home. ACT-NOW!!!*
