1557) EARLY 1700’S SCOTTISH LOCHABER WAR AXE:
2) Easy and quick to learn how to use.
Hundreds of Lochabers were quickly made during the Jacobite rising of 1715 to equip the Earl of Mar’s temporary soldiers called Levies. Levies were drafted from farmers’ and commoners who had little military experience and had to learn quickly.
The vast majority of Lochabers sold at auction are Victorian reproductions. Even though the Lochaber was once a bountiful object, sadly, few have survived. Why? Because Lochabers were viewed as somewhat ugly and were melted for their steel or simply not given the care they deserved. If Lochabers had been beautiful objects hung over the fireplace mantel, many more would have survived.
Provenance: This example is in good condition, retaining a piece of its original haft. It comes from a very fine European collection.
