1482) A RARE AND DECORATED GERMAN CLOSED BURGONET CIRCA 1590: This typology of the closed helmet is an exciting and highly collectible variant. Victorians named this type of helmet a “closed burgonet.” It was in vogue as early as 1520. It’s a close helmet with a falling buff that collapses instead of the usual visor and upper bevor.
Constructed: with a two-piece skull with roping on a medial comb. Black throughout but with decorated bands. A falling bevor/buff permits the knight to have fresh air by slightly lowering ( collapsing) the overlapping lames it was constructed with; this example has two. The movable visor and bevor are attached to the side center of the skull by dual pivots, a swivel hook to secure the bevor, and decorated throughout with etched bands depicting bands with trophies, foliage, and animal figures, edges with fluting en-suite.
Discussion: A closed burgonet is as elegant and chivalrous as a closed helmet. Ironically, closed burgonets sell for less than the traditional closed helmet despite having the same visual importance and character.
Conclusion: Items like this seldom come to the collector’s market. This rarity should be in your collection if you are a collector of exceptional taste. This is a well-built and very elegantly decorated helmet in excellent condition. It’s an item for the discriminating collector who only wants the rare and the best! Priced to sell quickly!!!*
