1478) RARE SCOTTISH REBATED CAGE BROADSWORD CIRCA 1700″s: Superb mint museum condition!!!
Discussion: This is not your regular Scottish sword. This rarity is a specially designed sword for training swordsmen and troops. It has the same superb construction as a regular Scottish broadsword, but the blade and tip are rebated so as not to hurt the participant’s opponent.
Description: Elegant cage basket hilt with pommel and protruding finial, original chagrin grips with original wire, rebated blade with false edge, and false tip, thin fuller along the top spine, wide fuller along 2/3 of the blade, makers mark at the ricasso. Signs of dings at the blade from swordplay.
Conclusion: These swords are rare because there were not that many to begin with. After they were no longer necessary, they were melted down or left to the ravages of time and eventually discarded. If you like broadswords, this is a unique find that should be in a museum. You can acquire it for much less than the cost of a regular Scottish broadsword from the same period!!!
