1689 Mask

1689)  EXECUTIONERS MASK NEAR IDENTICAL TO THE ONE AT THE WORLD-FAMOUS MUSEO POLDIPEZZOLI IN MILAN:

Discussion: Some executioner’s masks were symbols of authority, so the masses of people who could not read would know the person possessing it was an appointed person of authority like a judge. Executioners’ masks were not necessarily worn only by the person swinging the ax, or sword, or tying the hangman’s noose. They were used from the 1500’s and some to as late as the 1800’s.
Description: Constructed in the shape of a human facial anatomy with all apertures. Made of low carbon steel and decorated on the outer surface with cooper gilding.
Dimensions: 22 X 15 X 5 cm.
Provenance: A Hungarian collection.
Comparables: Museo Poldipezzoli, Milan Italy. #729 (inv # 2405).
Conclusion: I think it’s the ultimate conversation piece, and just in time for Halloween. Not as expensive for such a unique item. Act now! I think it will sell quickly!!!*
