1039) COLLECTION OF 20 MEDIEVAL CALTROPS: The caltrop was so combat effective it was used from the time of the Romans until WWII. It could stop a charging cavalry of highly armored knights yet were extremely inexpensive, easy to make and required no talent or training to use. The caltrop was a simple four sided pointed tip that will always land with a sharp tip pointing upright to impale the foot of a charging horse or puncture the tire of a truck. Not only would it stop the charging horse but, the momentum could throw the knight off his saddle. Caltrops are designed so that two sharp iron/steel spikes are always pointing upward from a stable base (for example, a tetrahedron). Caltrops were part of defenses that served to slow the advance of not only horses, but war elephants, and human troops. Iron caltrops were used as early as 331 BC by Darius III against Alexander the Great at the Battle of Gaugamela in Persia. On offer from a recent excavation are 20 Caltrops in varing sizes and in very good condition. Restoring them is very simple. Insert two weeks in apple cider /vinegar, the acid will clean them.
