2080 Templar Stone
2080) RARE AND IMPORTANT MARKER TO THE HOLY LAND CIRCA 1200’s:
Introduction: Carved from stone. Thick, heavy, and stout. By tradition, these were found along the route to the Holy Land. The Templar and the Knights of St. John served as the protectors of Pilgrims following these routes. Historical research identifies the road from Acre through Jaffa toward Jerusalem as being defended by both the Templars and Hospitallers.
Discussion: Another distant possibility is a demarcation stone on a Templar property; they are somewhat similar but would not be found on a road scattered throughout the route to the Holy Land.
Military orders also marked property with crosses. Archaeological research on the Latin East documents the use of stones to mark property boundaries and specifically notes that such practices became particularly associated with the military orders from the 13th century onward. One proposed Templar boundary marker is a cross carved into the natural rock at Wadi ‘Amud, associated with the Templar estate of Safed.
At Temple Bruer, a reported stone cross was traditionally interpreted as marking the boundary of the Templars’ estate.
Description: A thick, heavy, stout stone worked on a single face, the reverse and sides left in their natural unshaped state. A Latin cross is carved in low relief on the front, its surface bearing traces of red pigment. The stone is a coarse conglomerate with visible rounded inclusions, weathered across both worked and unworked surfaces. Mounted on a wooden display stand.
Condition: Very good for its age, conserved to museum standards.
Approximate dimensions with wooden stand: 12.5 X 9 X 4 inches.
Provenance: From a long-established European collection.
Conclusion: Whether it was a demarcation stone or a route marker, it’s an exceptional and rare item that could be the ultimate conversation piece for any collection. The stories this marker could tell if it could speak. It shows extreme age and makes a very profound Knightly statement.
