2068) SUPERB GOTHIC SWORD CIRCA 1450 WITH RARE DIAMOND-SHAPED POMMEL, MUSEUM QUALITY:

Description: This sword classifies under the Oakeshott typology as a type XVIII. The hilt is constructed with an Oakeshott Style 11 hexagonal guard featuring slightly downward-turned quillons expanding at the tips, and an Oakeshott Style F High Peak Cocked pommel. A double-edged blade of diamond shape tapering to a very sharp pointed tip.
Total length: Approximately 37 inches.
Condition: Given its superb condition and other factors, this sword was almost certainly a river or stream find.
Discussion: The Type XVIII blade design has been around since the Bronze Age. The design was also used by the La Tène culture (European Iron Age) and Romans in their spatha. It only fell out of favor during the “slashing periods” of Types X–XIV.
Why did the Type XVIII stand the test of time and continue to be reintroduced?
Because it’s a brilliant, all-purpose design for both slashing and thrusting. Structurally, its long medial ridge gives it strong rigidity. From a broad base of approximately 2½ inches across at the guard, the sword tapers to a sharp point. The Type XVIII has a single-hand grip; the blade typically measures about 32 inches long. There are a few different Type XVIII subtypes. Like other subtypes, these are defined by relatively small differences in the sword’s construction, size, or shape. All variants of the Type XVIII are slashing and thrusting weapons.
