2054) DECORATED SPANISH BULLET CROSSBOW CIRCA 1720:
Introduction: This piece represents a highly specialized evolution of the European sporting crossbow. The dramatic downward curve of the stock and the specific layout of the iron cocking lever indicate it was designed as a “slurbow” or a dedicated bullet/pellet-shooting crossbow. These were highly favored in Southern Europe for hunting small game and target shooting.
Discussion: The inclusion of a carved human head with glass eyes is a classic hallmark of early 1700’s Spanish decorative arts, often mirroring the grotesque or theatrical woodwork found in regional baroque furniture and architecture. The brass scalloped overlays provide both structural reinforcement to the curved wood and high-status visual appeal.
Description: Constructed from a single piece of rich fruitwood or walnut. It features a deep, distinctively curved “archer” profile along the midsection. The upper spine of the curved section is inlaid with overlapping, scalloped brass plates. A matching brass trigger guard houses a single iron trigger, terminating at a protective brass butt plate.
The wrist features crisp, hand-cut checkering for a secure grip. The lower toe of the stock is expertly sculpted into a high-relief caricature of a bearded man’s head, complete with inset white and black glass eyes. Equipped with a heavy, stylized iron lock and folding cocking lever mechanism mounted to the right side of the stock. A robust 49 cm wrought iron prod is secured to the stock via iron brackets. The front node terminates in a unique brass spur and pointed iron cone. Outfitted with an early woven hemp or linen string featuring a specialized central double-loop or pocket cradle configuration.

Condition: Superb, could be in a museum. The piece presents in excellent, highly stable antique condition. The wood retains a deep, authentic patina with minor handling wear consistent with age. The iron components show expected light mottling and oxidation but remain structurally sound. The string setup is a rare survival, retaining its early stringing pattern.
Conclusion: I would classify this crossbow as much a work of art as a shooting crossbow. The attention to detail is superb. The condition is museum quality. Priced to sell for a lot less than you would expect.
