2051) A HIGHLY DECORATED RARE VENETIAN WAR AXE FOR A HIGH RANKING OFFICER CIRCA 1590:

Introduction: This weapon is a highly distinctive type of battle axe or elite naval commando weapon for a high-ranking officer during the Renaissance in Venice and Northern Italy from the late 16th to early 17th century. The artistic execution reflects high-status Northern Italian craftsmanship.

Description: The monster profile on the front profile of the blade edge is masterfully sculpted into a grotesque creature or stylized monster profile. This motif is characteristic of Renaissance “mannerist” metalwork, where weapons were deliberately transformed into fantastical beasts. The openwork floral wheel in the center is a classic Venetian wheel design. This technique allowed the weapon to remain lightweight and highly agile while doubling as an expensive, eye-catching status symbol for high-ranking officers. The geometric diamond and circular sections down the handle are ebony (or darkened horn) and bone inlays. This luxurious wood-and-bone inlay style matches regional Italian cabinetry and firearm stock decorations from the period. The bottom is fitted with a carved bone terminal collar secured by a steel lanyard ring, which was used to tether the weapon to a wrist strap or ship’s rack

There is either the owners initials or a inventory controlled number which appears to be “I5 II” on the axe head.

Approximate Length: 22.5 inches.

Condition: Very good. As original as the day it was made.
