2032 Antique Spur

2032) A Highly Decorated English Rowel Spur, Circa 1620: Mint museum condition.

Introduction: This spur reflects a historical era in England, particularly around the English Civil War, when spurs transitioned from purely functional military gear into prominent fashion statements for wealthy gentlemen.

Description: Constructed with a large, dramatic six-pointed star rowel. The long, slender, sharp spikes are typical of the period, designed to pierce the heavy, thick leather flanks of contemporary riding boots to make contact with the horse. The neck is short, slightly angled downward, and features a thick, sculpted architectural scroll that splits into the rowel box. The two arms that curve around the heel are heavily stylized with scalloped, undulating lobes running along their outer edges. This wavy, deeply chiseled profile mimics organic or floral motifs popular in Baroque-era metalwork. At the ends of the branches are classic figure-eight terminals (two stacked circular eyelets). These were used to anchor the leather straps and large butterfly-shaped buckles over the instep of the foot.

Discussion: In the first half of the 17th century, wealthy English Royalists and Cavaliers adopted the practice of wearing riding boots and ornate spurs in non-riding contexts, including walking about town or attending court.

The spurs would purposefully “jingle” against the ground as they walked, serving as a loud audio cue of their elite equestrian class, wealth, and status.

Conclusion: Most spurs you see in the collector’s marketplace are non-decorated and in ground-find condition, with deep pitting. This one is exceptionally elegant, with exquisite workmanship and in superb condition. Because of the spur’s historical importance in Arms and Armor, this is an exceptional piece that would make a great addition to any collection or museum. ACT-KNOW this one is priced to sell today, and I won’t be getting another anytime soon!!!*
