1963 Adam and Eve

1963) LATE GOTHIC CATHEDRAL ADAM AND EVE LIMESTONE STATUE:

Introduction: This antique limestone relief depicts the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve in a style characteristic of late Gothic sculpture. The piece features two standing figures , Adam and Eve, flanking a central tree, around which a serpent is coiled, representing the Temptation in the Garden of Eden.

Discussion: The relief portrays Adam on the left and Eve on the right. Both are rendered with the stylized, somewhat elongated proportions common in Late Gothic architectural sculpture. A central tree trunk, likely representing the Tree of Knowledge, serves as the focal point. A large serpent is prominently coiled around the trunk, its head positioned near the top between the two figures. The figures exhibit modest poses; Adam holds a small leaf or branch, a traditional iconographic element representing their newfound shame after the Fall. Eve is depicted with long, flowing hair that reaches her waist.

Description: Carved from limestone, a common material for medieval cathedral architectural elements. The sculpture is consistent with age and exposure. Some original polychrome (pigment) remains visible, particularly the green on the serpent and the reddish-brown on the tree trunk. True to its age, there are noticeable losses, including broken sections along the top edge and older chips throughout the relief.

Provenance: By tradition from a bombed Cathedral during WWII. Entered the collectors market via owners 3rd party representative.

Approximate dimensions: H 17″ x W 14.7″ x D 8.2 inches. Weight: about 60 LBS

Condition: Very good as shown, conserved/restored to museum standards.

Conclusion: This is an exceptional conversation piece, and I doubt anyone you know will own one. You get a lot of value for the money.
