1815) ELEGANT GILDED AND ETCHED LION SWISS SABER CIRCA 1680: This is a lot of sword and flash for under $3K!!!

Introduction: Historically, the saber is associated with 17th to 20th-century cavalry use; however, its origins are much earlier.
Discussion:  The curved-blade sword (saber) is believed to have been introduced to Eastern and Central Europe by Central Asian nomadic invaders called “szablya” as early as the 9th century. The word saber (American) or sabre (English) is believed to have evolved in Western Europe from what is current-day Hungary. This uniquely distinguishable sword was popular in Hungary and had a strong following in Germany, where it was adopted for warfare.
In a perfect world, a saber is a sword sharpened on only one side, with a curvature on the blade and a basket or cage to protect the hand. In the real world, there is some confusion. Some sabers lack curvature on the blade or hand protection. Some sabers have specific names associated with their country of origin or style. For example, the tessak is a North German or Scandinavian sword, the schiavona is associated as Venetian, etc.

Description: Constructed with a gilded brass pommel carved in the form of a lion’s head with open jaws, protruding tongue, and finely sculptured ears and pelt. Chain knuckle guard leading from the pommel to the top quillon tip of a recurved guard. The upper guard tip is decorated en suite with the gilded lion’s head pommel. Circular ring guard originating at the quillon block, with an adjacent guard attached to the upper quillon. Single-edged blade with curvature, double-edged tip with deep fuller almost the length of the blade on the spine, decorated with etching on the blade and gilt on the lion’s heads and chain. Wire grip with ferrels at each end.

Length: Approximately 37.5 inches.

Condition: Very good.
