1692 Axe

1692) RARE EXECUTIONERS AXE CIRCA 1650: For the collector looking for the ultimate conversation piece and just in time for Halloween.

Description: A massive head of triangular shape with a strong medial ridge and about a third of the original haft. Mounted professionally on a metal stand.

Dimensions: Height, 22 inches, width 12 inches.

Condition: Superb.

Discussion: The axe was one of the first tools used by English executioners and was originally called the ‚beheading ax. In addition to the ax, the successful beheading was also greatly due to the wood block where the condemned’s head rested. For executioners to achieve a correct beheading, it was paramount for the block not topple over. Therefore, the block needed to have the right dimensions, shape, and weight.

Contrary to popular belief, most executioners’ axes were not used for decapitation as often as you may think. Some executioners ’ axes were used as symbols of justice, essentially symbolizing a powerful individual such as a Noble, judge, or an appointed person of authority. The axe was a visual reference for the masses who still could not read or write.

Conclusion: A rare collectible that could augment any collection and invoke the phrase “If only it could speak, what stories would this ax tell? “. Priced to sell today at under $4K!!!!*
